A complete example · Reading
From a highlight
to a judgment.
A small reading experiment, an outcome that falls short, and a revision that keeps the original.
This example is made up, to show how one judgment moves through Judiscend. Dates are relative and the results are invented. It isn’t evidence that the routine, or the app, works.
The question
“I keep highlighting things I agree with. A week later, I can’t explain the ideas without opening my notes. Would writing one sentence in my own words change that?”
- What I’ve noticed
- In my last few reading sessions, finding a saved passage was easier than explaining its main idea.
- The limit
- This is my recollection. I haven’t measured anything.
What I expect
“After each of my next four essays, I’ll write one sentence in my own words. Seven days later, before opening my notes, I’ll be able to explain the main idea of at least three.”
- Why I expect it
- Writing my own sentence may show me where my understanding has gaps.
- What counts as explaining
- In my own words, the essay’s main claim and one reason the author gives. Then I reopen the essay to check I haven’t got it wrong.
- How sure
- Not very. I’ve tried this now and then, never consistently.
- I’m wrong if
- Fewer than three of the four explanations meet that bar.
- When to check
- Seven days after each essay, then the whole set after the fourth. The dates go in my own calendar.
What happened
The condition I wrote wasn’t metTwo of the four explanations met the bar. One repeated the author’s phrase without the reason. The other missed the main claim.
- What I can say
- The result falls short of my “at least three”.
- What I can’t say
- That writing a sentence is useless, or that it caused the result. Four different essays and my own marking leave too much uncertain.
What I’ll change
“For the next four essays, I’ll keep the sentence and add one concrete example. Same seven-day check, same bar.”
The first judgment stays as version one, with its outcome. The new routine becomes version two, with its own reasons and dates. It’s another experiment, not a conclusion that the new routine works.
In Judiscend, you open the record yourself on the day you chose. Nothing runs in the background and nothing reminds you; the date lives in your own calendar.
